Working with Family of Trans’ and Non-Binary Clients | Alcohol Focus Scotland | vrijdag, 02. oktober 2020

Society is slowly shifting its understanding and acceptance of trans-identities to a positive stance, and most people have some awareness of Trans Rights and Equalities - but what happens when the diversity emerges in your family ?It is far easier to accept diversity at a distance – when it doesn’t actually affect one’s daily living, throw one’s own relationship into question, or challenges one’s identity.
Cis-gendered (non-trans’) family are queered by association, and generally have this situation thrust upon them - so the impact is severe. Severe because, aside from its deeply personal nature, this is most likely an aspect of life for which they have had no prior information, let alone preparation. Additionally at a time when the tectonic plates of their existence sometimes feel shaken to the core, they may well find themselves attached to somebody else’s emotional roller coaster, alienated from peers, and subject to judgemental gossip and bullying on all sides.
This workshop will explore how parents, partners and children of trans’ and non-binary people can be supported in sustaining and developing their own identity, acclimatising to personal and social change, coping with emotional overwhelm, and re-framing their relationships.
Aims of the eventIntroduce participants to some of the diverse issues of parents, partners, and children of trans’ and non-binary people. Enable some understanding of the impact of discovery and disclosure on the self and personal relationships.  Explore some of the personal and social issues family members **** in relationship with trans-identified people. Enhance understanding of working with parents, partners, and children of trans’ and non-binary people through exploration of client vignettes.

Counselling testimonialsRight at the start you advocated that everyone’s journey is different and that sentiment hugely influenced our approach. I am pleased to be able to say that even through this latest trial (surgery), we are still together and the sense of humour about the whole business hasn't been lost.
Tina guided us through with non-judgemental counselling sessions which gave us space to articulate and reflect on our feelings. She used a common sense, down to earth approach which made it easy to explore and communicate and we found a much better understanding of our situation and were able to reconcile our relationship on a much more positive basis.
We came to you for counselling 15 years ago. This week we celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary.
